People within the band’s orbit genuinely feared for his health.ĭespite their many ailments, reservations and burgeoning love of narcotics - or booze as was the case for drummer John Bonham - the monster that was Led Zeppelin continued lurching forward. He could still play, and perform, but he’d grown far more withdrawn. His already slender frame grew even more gaunt, and his already pale skin turned translucent. Page had dabbled with the opiate going all the way back to 1973, but lately, it had taken a noticeable toll. And I was thinking, is all this rock and roll worth anything at all?”Īround the same time Plant was experiencing existential doubts about continuing with Led Zeppelin, the group’s leader Jimmy Page was indulging in a pretty significant love affair with heroin. ![]() I was just furious that I couldn’t get back to the woman and the children that I loved. “I was furious with Page and Peter Grant. “I was really frustrated,” he said in Chris Welch’s book Led Zeppelin. His wife Maureen nearly died - actually her heart stopped for a moment in the hospital - and the Plant himself suffered a severely broken ankle that left him confined to a wheelchair for months.īeyond the obvious physical pain, Plant was also beginning to question internally whether the costs of recording and continuing the machine that was Led Zeppelin was even worth it any more. Plant was behind the wheel of a car, navigating the hilly countryside when his vehicle went over a cliff. Led Zeppelin were less than five months removed from some of the greatest performances they’d ever staged at London’s Earls Court arena, and had scattered to the wind in order to avoid England’s more severe tax laws. On August 5, 1975, Plant and his family were vacationing in the Greek Island of Rhodes. Here’s the story of how it all went down. As it turned out, their presumptive moment of triumph was marked by bad vibes, lingering illnesses, heavy drug use, messy performances, violence, and even riots, that all ended in a tragedy that nearly derailed the group entirely. The British group’s run through America that year was supposed to mark their return as the biggest rock band on the planet, after a future rendered uncertain by a catastrophic car accident that involved singer Robert Plant the year before. At our best we could just wipe the floor with the lot of them.” For almost ten years that statement was almost indisputably true, until suddenly it wasn’t.Įxactly 40 years ago, in the Spring and Summer of 1977, Led Zeppelin embarked on what would be their final tour through the country that made them superstars. ![]() “The most important thing was always the stage show… at our worst we were still better than most. “The records were just a starting point,” bassist John Paul Jones once explained. But for as crucial as their recorded output was, it was on the road that they really burnished their standings as the wildest, most sonically adventurous band in a decade overflowing with groups who made names for themselves by redefining the very definition of the word debauchery.Įven for as wild as the stories about mud sharks and racing motorcycles up and down the halls of hotels are, it was onstage where the real fireworks happened. Their genre-defining records set the template for brutal, blues-based rock that thousands, maybe even millions of bands have tried to adopt in their wake. Throughout the late 1960s and into the 1970s, Led Zeppelin earned a reputation for being the biggest, and heaviest band in rock and roll. "We plan to establish a camel industry base to attract investment, which will include processing camel meat, hair and dairy products," said Wei. Since the construction of the Baiming Expressway, Mazongshan and the whole of Subei have started industrial restructuring. The newly opened expressway will greatly cut the transport time of these resources to the outside world. Wei said Mazongshan has abundant mineral resources as well as cultural and tourism resources, but poor road conditions have made it difficult and expensive to access these resources. For a long time, the only road connecting Mazongshan to the outside world had been a dirt road, and the town seemed to be located at a dead end. ![]() Situated 480 km from the Subei County seat, Mazongshan covers 60,000 square km but has a population of only 13,000. The entire Baigeda-Mingshui section of the Beijing-Xinjiang Expressway, also called the Baiming Expressway, lies in Mazongshan Town, Subei County of Jiuquan City in Gansu. Li Dunyin, Vice Mayor of Hami, said, "The Beijing-Xinjiang Expressway will make Xinjiang more closely connected with inland areas and significantly stimulate the development of the economy and tourism industry in the areas along it." The trucks entering Xinjiang typically carry raw materials and machines as well as parts and accessories. Now is the harvest season for Hami melons, a kind of honeydew melon produced in Hami City of east Xinjiang, and most of the trucks leaving Xinjiang were carrying these and other fruit and farm produce. The expressway will cut nearly 1,300 km off the journey from Beijing to Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, compared with traveling via other highways, serving as the fastest and most convenient way to enter Xinjiang from north China by road. It passes cities including Zhangjiakou, Ulanqab, Hohhot, Baotou, Linhe, Ejin Banner, Hami, Turpan and Urumqi. With construction started in September 2012, the Beijing-Xinjiang Expressway, or G7, has been built across Beijing and five other provincial-level regions, namely Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Gansu and Xinjiang. The sections run through the Gobi Desert, which is characterized by drought and other poor natural conditions. The new sections have a combined length of more than 1,200 km-the 930-km Linhe-Baigeda section in Inner Mongolia, the 134-km Baigeda-Mingshui section in Gansu and the 178-km Mingshui-Hami section in Xinjiang. On July 15, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the governments of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Gansu Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region jointly announced that the 2,768-km Beijing-Xinjiang Expressway had become fully operational, with three final sections along risky terrain opened to traffic. ![]() "After this expressway is open, we can save one or two days and more than 1,000 yuan ($148.37) for every one-way trip to Xinjiang." Well, you might be tempted, hey, if I put a one (chuckles) and a zero together, it's gonna look like a 10,īut that's not, this is not how we do mathematics, this And this is also eight, so once again the equal sign is just saying that this, what we have on the left, is the same as what we have on the right. This is another way of writing eight, nine minus three plus two Side I have zero plus one minus one, well, one minus one is zero, so this is all going to be eight. So this, this, if I were to, if I were to compute it, that's equal to eight. See, nine minus three is six, plus two is eight, minus zero is eight. zero plus one minus one plus eight, is this true? ![]() Thus, CtADH prefers to accommodate a bulky phenyl substituent in the outer substrate binding tunnel as indicated in Figure 3c,d, but can essentially place it alternatively as well, namely at the inner region of the tunnel occupied by the n-propyl chain in Figure 3c,d. R-1-phenyl ethanol, however, is oxidized under CtADH catalysis as well, albeit with a significantly lower specific activity ( Table 2). This orientation, in which the phenyl ring is embedded in a hydrophobic environment within the outer part of the substrate-binding tunnel formed by Val141, Leu148, Ala184/185 and Trp191 ( Figure 3a), would lead to the product S-1-phenyl hexanol and is thus consistent with the preference of CtADH for the (S)-enantiomer of 1-phenyl ethanol, a CtADH substrate in oxidation direction ( Table 2). In Figure 3b, this is illustrated with the R-specific alcohol dehydrogenase from Lactobacillus brevis (LbRADH) which accordingly contains a much shorter C-terminal segment ( Figure 3a).įurther, similar to what had been done for SyADH, we placed n-pentyl phenyl ketone such that its re-plane faces NADPH. In this way, the helix α9 stabilizes the dimeric architecture ( Figure 3b) simultaneously, however, it blocks the surface used by the majority of SDR enzymes to coordinate a second dimer and thus to establish a homotetramer with D2 point symmetry. This helix sticks out from the main domain since it has a special double role at the level of the quaternary structure: as typical for SDR enzymes, the large helices α4/α5 and α6 function as a dimerization module and form a four-helix bundle with a second CtADH monomer ( Figure 3b) yet, in contrast to most SDR enzymes (but similar to SyADH), the particular helix α9 crosses over to the second subunit and forms a helical pair with its counterpart within the dimer. Like SyADH, CtADH contains a non-canonical helix α9 in its C-terminal segment ( Figure 3a). CtADH/NADPH/substrate complexes modelled on the basis of crystal structures of CtADH and its closest homologue suggested preliminary hints to rationalize the enzyme’s substrate preferences Biotransformations with selected ketones-performed with a coupled regeneration system for the co-substrate NADPH-resulted in conversions of more than 99% with all tested substrates and with excellent enantioselectivity for the corresponding S-alcohol products. These studies revealed a broad pH profile and an extended substrate spectrum with the highest activity for compounds containing halogens as substituents and a moderate activity for bulky–bulky ketones. A novel alcohol dehydrogenase from Comamonas testosteroni (CtADH) was identified in silico, recombinantly expressed and purified, enzymatically and biochemically investigated as well as structurally characterized. Due to their high regio- and stereospecificity, they are key components in a wide range of industrial applications. Alcohol dehydrogenases catalyse the conversion of a large variety of ketone substrates to the corresponding chiral products. |
